Illinois ranks second among all states in agricultural exports, yet we import 99 percent of our food. Illinois consumers spend approximately $48 billion annually for food, according to the Illinois Local Food, Farms and Jobs Council. Does this sound like a healthy or sustainable system?

We are fortunate in that there are many people working and devoting their lives and careers to implementing a simpler, more wholesome and nutritious approach to food. This is in stark contrast to the predominantly industrialized food system in place. However, communities are taking control of what they eat and where they get their food. It’s a matter of choice for some, but sadly not for all; especially children and other vulnerable people in our communities.
