Click to view Videos of the presentations by architects John Shafer and David Parker. This second in the series”Designing a Sustainable Springfield” was presented by SSI and SVG May 26, 2015.
John highlighted his project called “The Smart Growth Case Study” – two buildings at 6th and Vine streets in Springfield which house his architectural firm and the Illinois Times building next door. Both have quite a bit of sustainable design built into them, including placement of windows for lighting, usage of efficient design, super insulation, and many other features to make modern green buildings.

David then followed with a presentation on various buildings he has designed or rebuilt, starting with the “Leed Silver” IMEA building. He then showed rehabbed buildings and explained his ideas about reuse and redesign of older buildings, which contain “embodied energy”. He discussed his philosophy of reuse of these old structures, including formulas for incorporating this “embodied energy” into the payback period for construction when deciding whether to reuse or tear down existing structures.
